Technical Consultant (Risk, Air Quality and Noise)

    Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated Junior Consultant to support our risk and environmental modelling projects across a range of industrial, infrastructure and development sectors.

The role will involve technical assessments in the areas of process and industrial risk, air quality, and environmental noise. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced consultants and project managers to perform data analysis, undertake computer modelling, prepare technical reports and support the delivery of multidisciplinary consulting projects.

This position is suitable for a recent graduate or an early-career professional with an academic background in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline, and an interest in developing technical expertise in risk and environmental assessment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Risk Assessment and Modelling

    • Support qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for industrial and infrastructure projects.
    • Assist with consequence modelling of hazardous events, including fires, explosions and toxic releases.
    • Support the preparation of Quantitative Risk Assessments, hazard identification studies and other process safety assessments.
    • Collect, review and organise process information, equipment data, chemical properties and operating parameters required for risk assessments.
    • Assist with the development of event scenarios, failure cases and modelling assumptions.
    • Perform calculations and modelling using recognised risk and consequence assessment software.
    • Support the preparation of risk contours, consequence plots, tables and technical interpretations.
    • Conduct research on applicable legislation, technical standards, industry guidance and good engineering practices.

    Air Quality Assessment and Modelling

    • Assist with air emission inventories and the identification and characterisation of emission sources.
    • Compile and review source data, including emission rates, stack parameters, operating conditions and pollutant characteristics.
    • Undertake atmospheric dispersion modelling for industrial, infrastructure and development projects.
    • Process and analyse meteorological, terrain, building and receptor data required for modelling.
    • Support assessments of stack height, building downwash and potential air quality impacts at sensitive receptors.
    • Compare predicted pollutant concentrations against applicable air quality standards, criteria and guidelines.
    • Prepare air quality contour plots, modelling summaries and technical documentation.
    • Support ambient air quality monitoring programmes, where required, including data review and interpretation.

    Environmental Noise Assessment and Modelling

    • Assist with environmental noise assessments for industrial facilities, infrastructure and development projects.
    • Compile source sound power levels, equipment information, operating schedules and receptor data.
    • Develop and maintain environmental noise models under the guidance of senior consultants.
    • Support the prediction of noise levels at site boundaries and nearby noise-sensitive receptors.
    • Assist with the assessment of cumulative noise impacts and potential noise mitigation measures.
    • Support environmental noise monitoring activities, including preparation, field measurements, data processing and interpretation.
    • Compare measured and predicted noise levels against applicable regulatory limits and project criteria.
    • Prepare noise contour plots, assessment tables and supporting technical documentation.

    Project Delivery and General Responsibilities

    • Assist in preparing proposals, technical reports, presentations and client deliverables.
    • Undertake literature reviews, regulatory research and technical data verification.
    • Maintain clear and traceable modelling files, calculations, assumptions and project records.
    • Participate in site visits, inspections, surveys and data collection activities.
    • Work collaboratively with internal teams across engineering, environment, sustainability and health and safety disciplines.
    • Communicate technical findings clearly through written reports, presentations and discussions.
    • Support project managers in meeting agreed project scope, programme, budget and quality requirements.
    • Follow company health, safety, quality and project management procedures.
    • Undertake other relevant technical and project tasks as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
    • Candidates with a relevant master’s degree may also be considered.
    • Recent graduates and candidates with up to approximately two years of relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

    Technical Knowledge and Skills

    • Good understanding of engineering fundamentals, mass and energy balances, fluid mechanics and transport phenomena.
    • Basic understanding of atmospheric emissions, air pollution, acoustics, environmental assessment or process safety principles.
    • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, process flow diagrams, equipment data sheets and technical information.
    • Competence in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
    • Familiarity with data analysis, GIS, programming or technical modelling software would be advantageous.
    • Prior exposure to consequence modelling, air dispersion modelling or environmental noise modelling software would be advantageous but is not essential.
    • Knowledge of applicable environmental, process safety or occupational health and safety regulations would be an advantage.

    Personal Attributes

    • Strong interest in technical modelling, risk assessment and environmental consulting.
    • Careful and methodical approach to calculations, data management and quality checking.
    • Willingness to learn new modelling tools, technical standards and assessment methodologies.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to explain technical information clearly and concisely.
    • Able to work independently on assigned tasks while seeking guidance when required.
    • Effective team player with a collaborative and professional working style.
    • Able to manage multiple tasks and work within agreed deadlines.
    • Willingness to undertake site work and travel when required.

    What We Offer

    • Structured training and on-the-job coaching from experienced risk and environmental consultants.
    • Exposure to risk, air quality and noise projects across a variety of industries and sectors.
    • Opportunities to develop competence in specialist modelling software and assessment methodologies.
    • Experience working within multidisciplinary and international project teams.
    • A supportive environment for professional and technical development.
